Air Force veteran, minister, author, and radio host Chucky Thomas has announced his intent to pursue a grievance process after a series of events involving his son’s experience as a student-athlete at a historically Black university. Thomas, who is 100% disabled and a strong mental health advocate, is using his case to highlight broader issues around parental rights, mental health stigma, and accountability in college athletics.

As a father, Thomas raised concerns about his son’s well-being and reported difficulties with the athletic program to school officials. He says his concerns were dismissed, and later, his own mental health diagnosis was used against him in a way that left him feeling stigmatized and silenced.

“This is bigger than me,” Thomas said. “I want people to see how easily mental health labels can be weaponized. Veterans, parents, and anyone living with a diagnosis deserve to be treated with respect, not suspicion.”

Broader Issues Highlighted

  • Parental Rights – Thomas believes parents should have fair opportunities to raise legitimate concerns about their children’s education and athletics.
  • Mental Health Stigma – As a long-time advocate, Thomas emphasizes that his case reflects ongoing prejudice against individuals with mental health histories.
  • Veterans’ Voices – With decades of service and advocacy, Thomas says the experience underscores challenges veterans face when balancing family, health, and public life.
