In an increasingly fragmented society, the ZukunftsFinanz Foundation has launched its latest initiative, “Generational Dialogue,” designed to bridge the gap between younger and older generations. The program aims to promote intergenerational exchange and strengthen social cohesion across communities in Germany.
Under the guiding theme “Living and Growing Together,” the program introduces a variety of activities across multiple engagement levels:
“Memory Exchange” Story Circles
Seniors share personal life stories and historical events they have lived through with young people, who are encouraged to draw wisdom and inspiration from these experiences.
Skills Exchange Workshops
Older adults teach traditional crafts such as sewing or woodworking, while youth introduce them to modern digital tools, including smartphones, video calling, and social media.
“Co-Creation Spaces”
Through local partnerships, young and old collaborate on community projects such as garden redesigns, mural painting, or charity sales—strengthening neighborly bonds and mutual respect.
Emotion Theatre Lab
Using theater pedagogy and role-switching exercises, participants experience each other’s daily realities, deepening empathy and understanding between generations.
The pilot project is launching simultaneously in Essen and Münster and involves 6 schools, 4 care homes, and 2 neighborhood centers. Over the next 12 months, the program is expected to directly reach more than 6,300 individuals.
Project Leader Statement:
Katharina Jansen, Project Director at ZukunftsFinanz Foundation, stated:
“A truly compassionate society is built on mutual respect and understanding between generations. We believe that sharing life stories and dreams for the future is one of the gentlest ways to heal loneliness and generational divides.”
Future Plans and Expansion:
- A “Guide to Building Intergenerational Communities” will be published to inspire organizations across Germany to replicate the model.
- By the end of 2026, the program aims to expand into 50 additional cities and municipalities.
- The initiative has already attracted strong interest from municipal administrations and social institutions seeking to foster a warmer, more inclusive society.
The program is generously supported by EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr and reflects the ZukunftsFinanz Foundation’s ongoing commitment to human-centered innovation and social connection.
